Editor:

Is Joe McCarthy back again, looking for trolls in the woodpile?  Agenda 21 is not an international conspiracy. Neither are our public agencies irresponsible to the public interest or tools of despotism. Those who raise these issues are misguided by extremist propaganda or the fear factor. Agenda 21 is nothing more than a non-binding agreement among nations to work together to help make communities more self-sufficient and less carbon intensive.  It does not require anyone to do anything. It is simply a framework of agreement to help us work collaboratively together for all of our benefit. This agreement was signed by President George H.W. Bush and upheld by Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Just as Joe McCarthy did in the 50s, the promoters of this so-called conspiracy, like the John Birch Society, are using fear to their advantage. There is no scheme to take private property, relocate people, or redistribute wealth as pundits have day-dreamed.

It’s too bad the Montrose County Commissioners were misguided enough to draft a resolution in opposition. In the global age in which we live we need more, not less, international dialogue, agreements, and collaboration, let alone realizing the global impact that all of us have. We are no longer an island on the world stage. We need to lead, not bury our heads, or be driven by fear-mongers.
