We would like to express our thanks and gratitude to the local businesses and community members who donated to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center’s Telluride and Ouray fundraisers. The Center operates on a limited budget and we thank you for your support in order to continue this important work.

Since 1973, the CAIC has been the oldest public avalanche forecast program in the United States. In 2011 the CAIC expanded its reach with a full-time San Juan’s backcountry avalanche forecaster. The office is located in Telluride, and is becoming an ever-increasing presence in the region. For many years, sponsors, local observers and the CAIC have had great relations in relaying snow and avalanche observations, ultimately aiding in the accuracy of backcountry avalanche bulletins.

Historically, Colorado has one of the most dangerous snowpacks in North America and on average accounts for one third of all avalanche fatalities in the United States. The purpose of the CAIC is to minimize the economic and human impact of snow avalanches on the people of Colorado and businesses operating within the state. The CAIC provides transportation and recreational forecasts of mountain weather and avalanche conditions, as well as avalanche safety education. As more and more people venture into the backcountry, it is imperative that we continue to have this resource available. The CAIC provides valuable information for both recreational users and professionals venturing into the backcountry and helps safeguard the transportation of goods and services on Colorado’s highways.

Recently, a 501(c)3 organization called the Friends of the CAIC was created to support the CAIC, while contributing to avalanche awareness and education throughout the state of Colorado. The Friends of the CAIC was formed to promote avalanche safety in Colorado. Part of the Friends mission is to ensure adequate funding for the CAIC’s backcountry program. Through donations, grants, and fundraising events they raise money to benefit avalanche forecasting and education in the state of Colorado.
