MONTROSE – The owners of the newly created Chow Down Pet Supplies host a grand opening Saturday for their new downtown store specializing in dog and cat nutrition. Their brands will feature a large selection of high-quality all-natural pet supplies and dog grooming services.

The store at 202 Main Street actually opened Nov. 12.

The family-owned store has expanded from its successful sister store in Grand Junction.

Tim and Krista Bush, who recently moved to Montrose from Grand Junction, said downtown Montrose offered a good fit for their pet store serving customers with unique pet needs.

"Everyone has been real welcoming of us, from other business owners on Main Street to the customers being real friendly," Krista Bush said.

The store, housed in a 5,000 square-foot space  (double the space at the Grand Junction location) offers high-quality pet food, toys, treats, beds and grooming services, including a self-serve dog wash.

"All of our dog and cat food is corn free and animal byproducts free," said Tim Bush.

A mounting focus on ingredients – for pets as well as humans – in recent years has led to improved health in dogs and cats, said Krista Bush, adding that she and her husband have canvassed veterinarians about to best gauge a pet's health, as it ages, to ascertain what types of food it needs. "In all honesty, just in the changes we've seen in dogs since we started doing it have been incredible," Krista said. "We believe that dogs are carnivorous and they've developed into omnivorous, but they need meat, so we don't really believe in a source of protein from corn."

Krista said they seek to buy from Colorado-based companies, whenever possible, and from U.S.- based food companies, to avoid imports with questionable ingredients. In addition to the all- natural foods, the store carries specific products for pets with allergies or digestion issues.

Above all, the couple say, customer service is the signature quality to their business.

"Were going to carry your dog out to your car for you. We are going to do whatever we can to find the right food for your dog, even if that means trying several different bags until we find the right one.

“You're going to get a personal experience here," Krista said.

The self-serve dog wash is $10 for half-an-hour, and free on Sundays for a limited time.

The store's large space allows for programs such as indoor training, agility and massage workshops, and coordinated playtime activities. The times and dates for classes and events will be determined at a later time.

The Montrose store is the fourth Chow Down Pet Supplies store in Colorado (in addition to Grand Junction, there are stores in Evergreen and Fairplay).

The store is open daily Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday-Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information, call 970/249-5052.
