MONTROSE – Following the announcement last week that Montrose High School football team Defensive Coordinator Eric Handke was leaving for Salida, the decision was made to promote from within.
Defensive Secondary Coach Chuck Alexander will fill Handke's position.
"I'm excited,” Alexander said earlier this week. “It’s a really neat opportunity, it's an honor for coach [Todd] Casebier to ask to me to do."
Alexander and Casebier have been coaching together during their eight years with the team.
"We have good people on our staff, and all the things on defense we do well,” Casebier said. “It made sense."
Alexander was one of Casebier's first additions to the team eight years ago, when Casebier moved from Palisade to Montrose.
Prior to that, Alexander said, he’d coached flag and recreational league football.
Casebier said the team’s mounting excellence, over the past eight seasons, is a testament to Alexander’s skills.
"I think Chuck will take the defense and add his own wrinkles to it, and do the things that need to be done," Casebier said of his choice for defensive coordinator.
From 1980-84 Alexander, was a walk-on player at Texas Tech University, in Lubbock, Texas, where he played strong safety. During his senior year, Alexander earned honors as a first team Academic All American.
Alexander, an orthodontist, has operated Alexander Orthodontists since the late 1990s.
