The community visioning survey we conducted last year in preparation for writing (this year) the Ouray 2020 Economic Goals revealed than “an excellent educational system” was seen as a significant Ouray value. In fact, having one of the “top 10 schools in Colorado by 2020” was a goal of the majority, and was included in the published Ouray 2020 Goals.

It is one important component in our mission to work toward a year round population for Ouray, creating the infrastructure and foundation for a sustainable economy for our future. The quality of schools is seen as one of the most important assets considered by young entrepreneurs and/or relocating companies who are looking for the best place to invest in their own future, raise their families and contribute to the overall long-term economic health of that community.

We are fortunate to have our school board, school administration and staff, who understand this community expectation. They initiated the analysis of issues and developed potential steps to accomplish this lofty, but essential, goal. They have applied their professional expertise to create a long range plan, keeping in mind the limited resources available to our community, and the accountability required by our citizens. Attracting and sustaining high quality talent and providing moderately enhanced facilities and programs which meet changing educational needs are logical components in this attempt to meet the expectations of Ouray residents.

We commend their professionalism, ability, and effort to develop this plan they have now put before the community and urge the voters to carefully consider the value of the educational system in the overall future economic health of Ouray.

The Ouray Community Development Committee; Joyce Linn, Chair
