Fat tire snow biking has become a popular recreational activity in the Telluride area. In recent years bikers have found that riding compacted ski trails can be an option to extend the biking season into the winter. One trend has been to ride on Nordic trails that have adapted to allow for fat bikes. Recently, fat bikes have been seen riding on the alpine ski trails at Telluride. Unfortunately this is not a safe situation for bikers or operations on the mountain.
There are numerous operations going on throughout the evening that conflict with having biking on the mountain. With snowmobile, snow cat and winch cat operations beginning at 4 p.m. every day and continuing throughout the night, biking on the mountain is unsafe. Bikers need to look for other areas that provide safe biking experience without the potential for conflict.
Snow cat drivers and other mountain operations personnel on the mountain have seen bikers on Telluride Trial in the evenings. This is dangerous as there are multiple intersections where the trail and winch cables intersect, creating serious hazards. These steel winch cables are thin, low to the ground and under extreme tension. Snow cat drivers are very concerned about the potential for a collision and the resort’s main priority is safety.
Our winter operating plan does not allow biking on the ski area, a decision that was made out of concern for safety.
Thank you in advance for your understanding and we appreciate your cooperation and adherence to these regulations.
