By law we must have a balanced budget, and your Board, with recommendations from the school administration and the community, has to make some very difficult decisions to adjust our budget to the reduced funding. There is no doubt that given the magnitude of the state cutbacks, changes will have to be made at Ouray Schools next year.
We are putting information together to let you know how the state cutbacks will impact our revenues, and provide you with the data we will use for balancing the spending side of the budget. We want you to know that we are examining every line item in our budget for potential savings, every activity and position for ways to improve efficiency and reduce costs, and every potential source for increased revenue. We are not considering any tax increases in our planning.
In establishing the reduced budget, our aim will be to achieve our Strategic Plan goals for excellence in education of the entire child. It will be necessary to modify the programs we have identified to achieve these goals, to do things differently – and with less. Please be assured that we will retain our focus on maintaining and improving the high level of educational standards that we and our community have come to expect and demand. We will also do what we can to minimize the impact on our school’s excellent teachers and staff.
We encourage you to examine the data and let us know your priorities for programs and suggestions on how we can balance the budget. We will announce our work sessions. We invite you to attend and encourage you to participate in the process.
