MOUNTAIN VILLAGE – An unexpected mantle of fresh snow coated the Mountain Village base area Monday morning, giving the bevy of snowcats plenty to work with as they readied Misty Maiden for the Telluride Ski Resort’s official opening day on Thursday, November 24.

Telluride Ski and Golf CEO Dave Riley could see the progress from his office at TSG headquarters, and admitted that the ski area was in the comfortable position of being a bit ahead of schedule – snow-wise – for the resort’s opening.

Snow is, after all, the primary ingredient in any ski area’s recipe for success. TSG has, however, bolstered its menu with additional goodies yet again this winter, in anticipation of making the 2011-2012 ski season all the more delectable for its local and visiting skiers and riders.

The resort has already reaped the early-season benefits from last summer’s improvements to the mountain’s snowmaking system, while construction continues on the new on-mountain restaurant at the top of the Polar Queen Lift that promises to build on the company’s pledge to provide a more unique and diverse on-mountain dining experience.

Meanwhile, improvements to the base area in Mountain Village have taken the shape of yet another slew of TSG-operated retail stores opening this week, as well as a revamped bar/restaurant in the renamed Tomboy Tavern slated to open around Christmas. Furthermore, the resort has partnered with Hotel Madeleine as its official hotel, and eagerly awaits its third consecutive year as the host resort for the Snowboard World Cup, coming December 14-17.

Summer Snowmaking Enhancements = Winter Bounty

“The improvement we’ve made to the snowmaking system in the last few years is really obvious,” Riley said of the resort’s considerable snow coverage this early season, evidenced in the mountainous heaps pockmarking lower Misty Maiden earlier in the week.

The resort bolstered its snowmaking capabilities on the skier’s right side of that run, as well as added more fan guns to its fleet, for more energy-efficient, production-effective and quieter snowmaking activities near the base area.

With lower temperatures for much of November, the mountain’s snowmaking department was able to get a good start on the season, with a 25-inch base.

The mountain’s higher reaches will also boast manmade snow coverage, thanks to 11 new snowmaking towers on Woozley’s Way and Upper Lookout. The towers (like those found on See Forever) are more efficient and effective than the moveable snowmaking guns traditionally used in that area, making snowmaking operations on those runs more straightforward. The resort has also added another Pisten Bully groomer to its fleet of snowcats.

Other mountain improvements include more glading, both in the Lift 5 area between Silvertip and Henry’s, as well as on the skier’s right side of Bushwhacker. Skiers and riders will also notice the Prospect Bowl area got a facelift over the summer, with a fleet of handcrafted wood signs created by longtime Telluride Ski Patroller Jim Greene.
