My friend Jeff Downs survived a bad car wreck recently when his car slid on black ice and rolled off the highway on Lizard Head Pass. He sustained a punctured lung, a dozen broken ribs and fractured vertebrae, and had to be flight-for-life transported to St. Mary’s Hospital, where he was kept in the intensive care unit for a week.
Probably everyone in Telluride knows Jeff: he is a longtime local and friend to many. I met him over 20 years ago when I first moved to town. Living simply off the grid, growing his food, playing music, inventing stuff, and charging up seemingly unrideable single-track on his mountain bike, Jeff has always been an inspiration to me.
He’s already healing and will recover, but he won’t be able to perform his customary work of shoveling snow from roofs for awhile. Meanwhile, if anyone would like to help him out, his friends at U.S. Bank in Telluride will direct deposit cheques payable to Jeff Downs into his account.
Peace and joy,
