TELLURIDE – Frannie Major Aura wrangles wisps of pine-scented greenery onto the eaves of Between the Covers Bookstore, while Allison Templin surveys the operation from below. Green needles fall from the garland, drifting like wayward snowflakes to the sidewalk, as the duo discuss details of the decorating operation – like how many feet of red ribbon they’ll need, and whether they should add pink pepperberries to the wreath on the front door.

Like two merry harbingers of the holiday, Aura and Templin have brought the elements of a festive Telluride Christmas to the hearths and doorsteps of local homes and businesses this winter. Aura’s floral and garden design company, New Leaf Design, brings a modern and organic twist to traditional holiday décor, both indoor and out.

Templin, who is in real estate in Telluride but teamed up with longtime friend Aura for the holiday decorating blitz, says creating a warm and inviting backdrop for any manner of holiday event lies at the heart of New Leaf’s design approach.

“We want to set the scene for the perfect holiday,” she says, noting that they can fashion a fitting milieu for almost any holiday gathering, adding sparkle to a special event or simply creating the ideal backdrop for an intimate evening with family around the Christmas tree.

Taking some of the hassle out of the holidays is also one of New Leaf’s initiatives, Aura says. “We realize people are hurrying into town for their vacation, or simply don’t have the time to decorate their home or business. Our goal is to create something that is aesthetically pleasing and feels festive… all our clients have to do is show up.”

Aura describes the New Leaf style as minimalistic yet elegant, boasting varying degrees of organic hints and modern panache.

“It’s all about clean lines and simplicity,” she explains. “Some materials lend themselves more to the organic side, like wood and nature-inspired elements, while others – glass, for example – may seem like the opposite of the organic side yet still create an impression of clean and simple.”

After taking a course in landscape design, Aura started New Leaf in 2007, first as a garden and container design business working in conjunction with her husband’s local landscape company San Juan Landscapes. She soon moved onto floral design for weddings and events, taking three floral design classes in New York City; In fact, she designed all the floral elements of her own “modern spring” themed wedding last March.

Templin, who has always had an interest in floral design since she worked at a florist’s shop in high school and later shadowed a well-known florist in San Francisco, teamed up with Aura for this holiday season’s decorating efforts.

The twosome is ready to tackle any holiday decorating project: They can do lighting and outdoor design, provide custom-made bay leaf as well as more traditional holiday wreaths in a variety of styles, and can tend to all the details of any size gathering or event, from invitations to table settings and floral centerpieces. They offer floral arrangements for the holidays, and will even set-up and decorate your Christmas tree.

Aura and Templin will be sharing samples of their holiday design elements this Noel Night, Wednesday Dec. 2, at 137 Colorado Ave. on corner of Colorado and Fir St. In addition to their holiday samplings of wreaths, garlands, hanging art, and other holiday kit, they will have topiaries, amaryllis and paper white bulbs, and other gifts for sale.
