TELLURIDE – The Miners stepped up to the front lines battered and depleted, but nevertheless managed to rack up more than 80 points to take the win Saturday against Dolores.

Leading point scorer Mike Matthews was nursing an injured elbow. Many of his teammates were recovering from illness. And yet the Miner boys still managed to defeat the Bears at their home den, 83-57.

“It wasn’t their best basketball, but they maintained their ability to score. That was key,” says boys basketball coach and TMHS Athletic Director Mike Hughes of the Saturday night win in Dolores, which put Telluride’s record at 3-1.

Telluride outscored Dolores in all but one period, coming up with 22 points in the first and 27 in the third (compared to the Bears’ 12 and 13, respectively.) Veteran basketballer Ian MacCraken lead the team with 22 points on the evening, followed by Matthews with 17, Carl Schroedl with 13, and David Gerald and Kevin Doody chalking up 10 points apiece.

Following the weekend win, the Miner season goes into a three-week hibernation for the Christmas holiday. The hiatus will offer the Miners a much-needed rest, and hopefully help get players back on two (uninjured) feet.

“This break comes at a good time for us – we’ll try and get everybody back healthy and at 100%,” Hughes says. The Miners will need to have all engines firing when they return to the basketball court in January, when the high school basketball season kicks into high gear.

“This league is very difficult, we’ve got some tough competition this year. We’ll need to have our A game ready when we get back from break… if we do, we’ll have a pretty good shot” at making it into the post-season, Hughes says.

The Lady Miners didn’t fare as well against Dolores this weekend, succumbing to the Bears’ prowess on Saturday.

Both girls and boys teams return to the court following the New Year, when the Miners host the Ridgway Demons on Friday January 9. They will then travel to Mancos for games on Saturday, January 10.
