TELLURIDE - No Barriers Summit co-founder and blind adventurer Erik Weihenmayer will lead a summit hike along a spectacular Rocky Mountain ridgeline as part of the 2013 No Barriers Summit coming to Telluride Thursday, Aug. 8-Sunday, Aug. 11.

The four-day biennial arts and outdoor adventure festival for people with varying disabilities and abilities takes advantage of the state’s remarkable mountain scenery, active lifestyle and challenging terrain with an array of adventure sports clinics that range from geocaching to sailing, skateboarding and bouldering.

Weihenmayer’s summit hike, on Saturday, Aug. 10, is open to all. “Often, we are forced to throw out the expectations of others and rise to the level of our own internal potential,” says Weihenmayer, who will lead hikes with Jordan Romero.

Adaptive road biking clinics take place, in morning and afternoon sessions, on Friday, Aug. 9, with cycling instructors providing training, supervision and cycling and safety equipment. A variety of adaptive cycles, including upright, recumbent, hand-powered and pedal-powered, as well as two- and three-wheeled options, will be available; the level of participation is based on prior cycling experience. Those with more experience and higher levels of physical fitness can participate in the 30-mile Handcycle Road Ride on August 10 (open to any type of road bike). Other sports clinics include downhill 4-cross biking, fly fishing on the San Miguel River, geocaching, kayaking and canoeing, scuba diving, golf, tennis, horseback riding, rock climbing, sailing and skateboarding. Several new-this-year arts clinics are also available.
