Currently, the 2008 OCHS photo exhibit “San Juan Memories” is underway at the Ouray County Museum, with numerous photos from local and regional photographers entered. The exhibit will be judged by photographer Doug Richards, who has been photographing western wild places for over 30 years and won first place in photography at the 2007 Alpine Artists Holiday in Ouray.
The exhibit can be viewed until July 19 at the museum, 420 6th Avenue, during regular hours: Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; and Sunday, noon-4 p.m.
A guided tour of historic Main Street is scheduled for Saturday, June 14 at 3 p.m. Participants will join a knowledgeable guide to learn about Ouray’s colorful characters and splendid architecture that has contributed to the Main Street seen today.
On Father’s Day, Saturday, June 15, all fathers receive free admission to the museum.
The Ouray County Historical Society’s Evenings of History 2008 summer lecture series begins on Tuesday, June 17, when local resident, author and avid hiker Kelvin Kent presents his talk “Ouray Hiking Trails.”
Raised on the island of Jersey, in the British Channel Islands, Kent now calls Ouray home, and has been hiking the San Juan Mountains for over 25 years. Throughout his life, Kent has also participated in several worldwide expeditions in Europe, Central America, Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the Himalayas in Nepal. His talk will highlight Ouray area trails, both modern and historic, that are perfect for hikers of all interests and abilities.
Other topics in the 2008 lecture series will range from “Mines of Ouray County” to “Marie Scott, Ranching Matriarch of the San Juans” to “Wildflowers of the Colorado Mountains.” The lectures are held every Tuesday night from June 17 through July 29, and begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Ouray Community Center, except for the final lecture on July 29, which will be held at the Wright Opera House. Admission to the lectures is free, but donations are very much appreciated by OCHS.
One of OCHS’s most popular events, the guided Cemetery Walking Tour, is scheduled for Saturday, June 21 at 9 a.m. Learn about the notorious characters from Ouray’s past that were laid to rest in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
For those interested in the fascinating history of Ouray County’s railroads, the Corkscrew Railroad Bed and Turntable guided hike is scheduled for Saturday, June 28 at 9 a.m.
