The U10 Ouray County Raptors started their season April 18 with two games in Cortez. In their first game, against the Cortez Panthers, the Raptors took charge of the first half, scoring four goals.

Ian Yocum scored an unassisted goal, Gannon Rikkers scored two unassisted goals and Jonathan Zaugg scored one goal. Passing and teamwork dominated the Raptors’ field. Game goalie Colin Kraft was kept on his toes, blocking at least three Panther goal attempts.

In the second half, the Panthers put on the pressure to score, but rotating midfielders Ravi Inmon, Ethan Casselberry, Cora Ticherich, Jonathan Zaugg and offenders Gannon Rikkers, Ian Yocum and Eli Hietala kept the ball in motion. There were many drives by both teams to score but none were successful. Sam Tyler, Tate Fletcher and Emma Haaland were a defensive wall throughout the game, not allowing any balls past. Final score Raptors 4, Panthers 0.

In the Raptors’ second game, against the Cortez Tigers, the Raptors scored four goals in the first half – three by Jonathan Zaugg. Hietala passed to Zaugg for the first goal; Rikkers had an unassisted goal; Ticherich threw in to Zaugg, who then scored; and Zaugg scored an unassisted goal. Kraft was a lonely goalie, with defenders Tyler and Haaland consistently kept the ball away from the Raptors’ goal.

In the second half, Raptor midfield and offense ruled, demonstrating strong teamwork and passing skills in scoring eight goals. Yocum scored two unassisted goals and one assisted by Ticherich; Hietala scored one unassisted goal and one assisted by Inmon; Inmon scored a goal assisted by Hietala and Rikkers and Zaugg each scored one unassisted goal. The Tigers got on the board with a penalty kick late in the game. Final score Raptors 12, Tigers 1.
