MONTROSE – The tone for the game was set within the first minute on Saturday, May 10, in Montrose, when Ouray County’s opponents, the Fire Hawks, scored the first goal. The Ridgway/Ouray coed third- and fourth-grade team, the Bears, gave it their best, but the first quarter was dominated by the opposition’s offense.
Lincoln Sackman had a goal attempt for the Bears blocked, and the Fire Hawks scored one more goal this quarter. Holding the offensive line for the second quarter were Michael Sella, Kaisa Simon, Maya Crull, Ethan Casselberry, Lizzie Ragle, and Lydia Leafstrand. There were many goal attempts, but no Bears scored. They kept the Fire Hawks’ defensive lineup occupied, however. Defenders Sackman, McKinley Mueller and Kakito Moraz did their part sending the ball back downfield whenever necessary. Haley Crozier played as goalie.
During the third quarter, Eli Hietala was a busy goalie and had two great saves that prevented any scores. Maya Krull, Sam Rondinelli and Andrew Sherwood were the defensive wall and were busy for most of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Bears had two blocked goal attempts. The first was a drive by Moraz, then Haley Crozier blocked a goal kick. Leafstrand, Mueller and Shelby Hernandez were the busy defenders, constantly sending balls back downfield. On the offensive, Alistair Fene, Laura Henshaw, Simon, Casselberry, Moraz, and Crozier were always on the move. Sackman was goalie and had two great saves.
The Fire Hawks managed to slip in two more goals in the final quarter, ending the game with a 4-0 shutout.
