Seriously Injured Hiker Rescued on El Diente

SAN MIGUEL COUNTY – The San Miguel County Sheriff's Office received the report of a hiker falling on the traverse between Mt. Wilson and El Diente, in Dolores County, on Monday, June 24, at approximately 2:45 p.m.

The hiker fell approximately 20 feet, “sustaining serious lower extremity injuries,” according to an SMSO press release. SMSO deputies, in coordination with the Dolores County Sheriff's Office, and members of San Miguel County Search and Rescue responded to the Telluride Airport, traveling to the site of the accident in a helicopter from Olathe Spray Service, piloted by Devin Felix.

A Blackhawk helicopter from the Colorado Air National Guard High Altitude Aviation Training School in Eagle also responded. Thanks to the expertise of the pilots and of SAR eam members, the hiker was rescued from approximately 14,000 feet, and transported to Montrose Memorial Hospital via an ambulance that was waiting at the Montrose Airport.
