Sound Long-Term Planning Focus of Shelter

We have been hard at work planning to make 2009 even more productive against the economic challenges we are all facing. One major decision was to discontinue our capital campaign for a new shelter until the economy stabilized. Pushing forward would be unwise and a burden to our supportive community amidst such economic environmental uncertainty.

We also realized that the growth of our organization, which is significantly supported through our Thrift Shop, was going to face a revenue cap due to current space limitations. As we envision a new shelter it undoubtedly will require increased operational costs. Thus, the need to expand our earning potential to offset these costs has emerged as a priority and we intend to expand our Thrift Shop in 2009. Building a new shelter without preparing to cover additional operational costs would not reflect responsible planning.

Other measures to secure a successful 2009 involve revamping our fundraising initiatives. For example we are planning spring and fall benefit concerts (“Paws for Music”) and will be replacing our Telluride-based fundraiser “The Fur Ball” with an event (“Paws for Art”) that will require less resources to produce yet hopefully generate more income.

Second Chance Humane Society had a very productive 2008, including remodeling of our current shelter to double our sheltering capacity for dogs, and we rescued and adopted more homeless pets than ever. Our Thrift Shop also performed at greater levels and our volunteer base expanded in response to greater needs for such things as dog walking, cat cuddling and fundraising support.

And of course, our mission not only includes rescuing homeless pets but also preventing homeless pet issues and we will continue an emphasis on community outreach and services. For example, as a result of grant funding we offered full rebates to pet owners for spay/neuter surgeries of their pets throughout the month of February. Partial rebates are available throughout the rest of the year.

We also are coordinating with the entire Western Slope through a coalition of animal welfare agencies to increase collective capacity to reduce homeless pet issues. Our success and progress would not be possible without the generous support and interests of our surrounding community – for which we hold the deepest gratitude.
