TELLURIDE – Regional soccer rivals Crested Butte knocked Telluride out of the running for a State Tournament invitation this week, beating the Miners on Telluride’s home turf 5-0. Undefeated Ridgway and 9-2 Crested Butte have clinched the top two league spots, putting Telluride in third with a 6-2 record.

The Tuesday night game at the THS pitch was a big one for the Miners, who had hoped to upend the Titans to stay in striking distance of a State Tournament berth. “The boys realized how big a game it was, and I think they ended up psyching themselves out instead of just relaxing and playing like they know how,” said THS boys soccer coach Ryan Kusuno. “We made them [the Crested Butte team] look a lot better than they really are.”

That kind of composure under pressure only comes with experience, Kusuno said, admitting that the team “is still working on learning that.”

Kusuno hopes the home turf loss this week will help instill in the team’s underclassmen, who he says look strong for next year’s team, the idea that every game is important – and not just the final games of the season leading up to post-season play. Telluride would still be in the running for State had they been able to chalk up a few more early-season victories. “It’s been a good learning experience for the boys, since they’ve realized that the first games matter as much as the last,” Kusuno said.

The Miners still have two games left on the schedule; they met the Montrose JV Thursday night in Telluride (no results as of press time) then will play current league champs the Ridgway Demons on Thursday Oct. 16 in Ridgway. “Our goal is to finish the season on a strong note,” Kusuno said.

Lady Miners Beat Nucla

In other THS sports news, the varsity and junior varsity Lady Miners posted two big wins to their records this week, with both teams beating their Nucla rivals in Nucla on Tuesday night.

The J.V. squad won the game in three matches, losing the first 20-25 but coming back to win 25-29 and 15-11. The Varsity squad beat Nucla in the first match 25-19, lost in the second 21-25, but rallied in the next two matches 25-21 and 25-16 to take the win. The Lady Miners will face Norwood at Norwood this evening.
