Last Sunday, from the comfort of Roadside Rock south of Ouray, I viewed the “Bus Over the Side” field training exercise conducted by our many emergency services personnel from the county, city and town.

This was an awesome exercise in coordination, communication and technical skills of our emergency services in responding to an incident which unfortunately may be much too possible along our precarious mountain roads. It was so realistic that one horrified onlooker seriously asked me if I knew the condition of the victims.

I’m looking forward to hearing how our emergency personnel feel the exercise went. Undoubtedly, they will identify improvements that can be made, but from my vantage point I was comforted to know that in our small community we have people with the skill, training and dedication to respond to such emergencies.

On behalf of the county, I would like to thank the many volunteers who generously donate their time and energies to our various emergency services. You are too numerous to be named without leaving someone out, but I hope you realize how much the community appreciates and relies on your efforts. You are an integral part of what makes Ouray so special for all of us.
