On behalf of all the four-legged beings here at the Second Chance Humane Society I would like to extend our deep and enthusiastic gratitude toward the entire Ouray, San Miguel, and Montrose County region, which all contributed to the smashing success of the Third Annual Wine and Whiskers Carnival held last weekend. I have heard nothing but rave reviews and exclamations of the event being beyond expectations once again and I know that it took scores and scores of you to make that happen!

For example, event sponsorship income more than doubled this year as sponsors were more generous than ever! Furthermore, fourteen local Restaurants contributed an array of scrumptious food, which was presented artistically and delightfully, with a New Orleans touch and taste flowing throughout, to feed the standing-room-only crowd that came out in incremental weather to celebrate and support Second Chance.

Additionally, the live and silent auctions, stocked with over 350 items, were a strong testimony to the support that Second Chance appreciates from business, service providers, artists, and more. I wish I could thank each of you personally, for your generosity truly makes a difference in the lives of homeless pets (the evening generated more than $30,000 toward shelter and animal care operations!).

I am still hearing a lot of excited chatter about the Fashion Cabaret – which highlighted the talented community that lives amongst us. From skilled choreographers to drummers, light twirlers, teen salsa dancers, runway models to African dancers and hip hoppers – the Cabaret had it all! Also remember that there were “behind the scenes” crews who assisted with audio, video, and timing aspects of the show to provide it with that well-produced feel.

Including the supermodels from the runway and those soliciting auction items and food, those involved in registration and checkout, helping in the kitchen, those that set up, decorated, and took down the event – the number of dedicated volunteers involved in putting on this event was astronomical and you are all wonderful! And you all helped make Wine and Whiskers even more of a community based endeavor and success story.

Our community is certainly fortunate to have an animal shelter, particularly one that not only shelters and cares for adoptable pets until they find their forever home but also that rehabilitates, spay/neuters, vaccinates, microchips, trains, and exercises and socializes us. The mass support of our event helps Second Chance to realize how critical such services are to this community. And it also helps us to remember how fortunate we are to be in this community. It is not one of apathy or inhumanity but one of generosity, compassion, and action.

I thank each and every one of you: donor, sponsor, attendee, supermodel, and volunteer – for making this event so worthwhile and profitable. And I thank the staff and board members of Second Chance who contributed endless hours in making this event so remarkable!
