The USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS), in cooperation with the San Miguel County and Montrose County Weed Control Programs, has cost-share assistance available to private landowners on Wrights Mesa (Norwood and Redvale), for the removal of three highly destructive invasive weed species: Whitetop, Russian Knapweed and Sulfur Cinquefoil. In addition to the removal of these invasive species, some landowners may be eligible for cost-share assistance for other practices that may be deemed necessary to reclaim infested sites. These practices could include reseeding, fencing, stockwater development, and prescribed grazing.

To be eligible for NRCS cost-share assistance, landowners must be agricultural producers and have farm records established with the Farm Service Agency (FSA). If approved for funding, landowners may enter into a multi-year contract for weed removal and reclamation of their land. Please call the USDA-NRCS office at 970/327-4245, if you are interested in signing up for this program. The application deadline is June 19 of this year.

The San Miguel County Weed Program (970/327-0399) and the Montrose County Weed Program (970/249-5216) will also be offering cost-share assistance to supplement the funding offered through the USDA-NRCS. This is a great opportunity to take advantage of available funds and remove Whitetop, Russian Knapweed and Sulfur Cinquefoil from your Wrights Mesa property.
