MONTROSE COUNTY – The hunter who died near Maher on Tuesday has been identified as James J. Ayer, 56, of Crawford, according to Montrose County Coroner Dr. Thomas Canfield.

Canfield said Ayer’s death was an accident, caused by a single gunshot wound to the head when a member of his hunting party dropped his rifle.

Maher is south of Crawford, on Colorado State Highway 92.
