“The Hoop Shoot is a free national contest presented by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks to encourage fair, drug-free competition among our youth,” said Event Chairman Danny Wesseling. “Class winners at our local contest will go on to the district contest, and district winners go to the state contest. State winners will represent Colorado at the national finals, where the winners are enshrined in the National Basketball Hall of Fame.”
To ensure a successful event, Wesseling said that more helpers are needed.
“We always need a few more helpers on the day of the event, and no experience is necessary,” he said. “We’ll begin setting up for the contest about 10 a.m. and should be done by about noon.”
Registration for the event will start at 10 a.m., with competition starting promptly at 11 am. Contestants must be between the ages of 8 and 13 on April 1, 2011 to be eligible, and parents are required to bring a photocopy of the child’s birth certificate to the event. All eligible Ouray, Ridgway and Silverton children are encouraged to compete. Anyone wishing to help, or needing more information, should call Wesseling at 626-5058.
