MONTROSE – Tired of all those pet hairs clogging up your bathtub drain? A new business in Montrose has the answer: the city’s first commercial, self-serve pet washing station.

The idea isn’t original, said Hannah Bou-Matar, who with her husband Omar opened Crystal Clear Wash in a building they renovated at 233 West Main Street. The pet wash is in the laundry section, which offers both help-yourself and full-service laundry services with a wide range of washers and dryers that can hold loads of up to 75 pounds. The business also includes an automatic car wash and several hand-wash bays, but the pet wash is definitely a novelty here, Bou-Matar said, although there are a couple pet-wash businesses in Grand Junction, where the Bou-Matars live.

Neither Hannah nor her husband had ever been in business before, she said, but they were looking for an opportunity when they saw that the West Side Mini Mart and Car Wash was up for sale.

“We didn’t want to deal with gas sales, so we dug out the tanks and expanded,” she said. “Then we took one of the car wash bays, and made it part of the laundromat and the dog wash as well.”

All services, including washing machines, accept folding money, credit cards or debit cards as well as coins. Customers can also join the WashCard program, where they pay up front for a card for a 10 percent discount on purchases used with the card.

Before opening their doors, the Bou-Matars did a lot of research and got advice from Omar’s parents, who own a car wash in Clifton, Hannah Bou-Matar said, to “look at the numbers” before making such a big commitment.

The new business has also created work for two local people who help run the place and fill in on the couple’s days off, Bou-Matar said.

“Hopefully we’ll hire someone else soon, so we won’t have to work 12 hour days,” she said.

The Bou-Matars commute from Grand Junction, but hope to become involved in the Montrose business community, particularly the city’s new Downtown Development District, which includes that portion of West Main Street.

“This side of Main Street really needed something, and we hope to encourage more people to develop on that side of Main,” Bou-Matar said. “Obviously we’re here for most of our week and very vested in investing in Montrose.”

The laundry is also the “cleanest in town,” she said, adding she takes pride in the fact that it’s a family business, and not a chain franchise.

The business website, at www.crystalclearwashco.com, tells about the services it offers in detail: four car wash bays and a truck/RV bay as well as an automatic car wash, 30 washers and 22 dryers, including mega-load washers great for cleaning comforters and sleeping bags as well as multiple loads of clothes.

The car wash at Crystal Clear Wash is open 24 hours, seven days a week. The laundromat and dog wash are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the last wash at 7 p.m. To learn more, go to the website or call 240-3800.
