Ouray Track and Field Team Garners Two First Place Finishes

OURAY – The Ouray High School Boys and Girls Track and Field team came home from the Bulldog Invitational in Hotchkiss last weekend with two first-place ribbons and four personal records set.

As a team, the girls scored 50 points and placed sixth; the boys scored 38 points and placed seventh overall. Sixteen teams from around the Western Slope participated, including 4A schools Montrose and Delta, and 3A Aspen and Roaring Fork High School.

Ouray senior Geordyn MacDougall took first place in the girls’ 300 m hurdles, with a time of 52.85 seconds. She also took second in the 100 m hurdles.

On the boys’ side, Ouray HS senior Kaleb Sackman, fresh from the state basketball tournament, finished first in his specialty, the triple jump, with a leap of 41’ 10.5”. That qualified as a PR for Sackman who set his last personal record (41’ 9”) at the regional meet last year.

Also scoring podium finishes for the girls were Ridgway freshman Jasmin Braund and junior Candace Yengst. Braund trimmed .12 of a second off her old PR with 13.78 second 100 m dash, to finish second in Hotchkiss. Junior Yengst took second in the girls’ triple jump, adding nearly eight inches to her old PR with a jump of 32’ 0.75”.

Third place finishers for Ouray were Kaleb Sackman in the long jump (18’ 10.5”) and the boys’ 4X200 m “A” relay team (Jaxon Gaita, Eli Holmes, Chris Cramp and Kyle Cotton).

Ouray relay teams also scored three fourth place finishes: the girls’ 800 medley relay (Braund, Sydnee Kimmel, MacDougall and Yengst); the girls’ 4X200 relay (Braund, Kimmel, MacDougall, Yengst); and the boys’ 4X400 relay (Holmes, Noah Hughes, Sackman and Cotton).

Eli Holmes set a personal record of 55.67 seconds in the 400 m dash, finishing sixth.

And Kyle Cotton extended his best throw in the discus by a whopping seven feet (!) to 105’ 6”, good enough for seventh place in Hotchkiss.

Next up for the Trojans is the Bruin Invitational at Cedaredge HS, Saturday, April 2. The bus leaves the Ouray gym at 6 a.m.  The meet begins at 9 a.m.
