Telluride Wine Festival Kicks Off Thursday, June 23

TELLURIDE – The Telluride Wine Festival comes to town June 22-27, kicking off with a Welcome Reception Wednesday, June 22, 5-7 p.m., for VIP passholders, chefs, speakers, winemakers, sponsors and exhibitors at La Piazza, in Mountain Village. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet and mingle with distinguished chefs, sommeliers, presenters and winemakers, while enjoying live music and the breathtaking views from La Piazza.

Next up on the schedule is lunch, on Thursday, June 23 lunch, orchestrated by award-winning Telluride Chef Erich Owen, of the Sheridan Chop House, who creates American cuisine with a French technique, and who has teamed up with Wine Festival guest chefs for the last three years.

Teaming up this year with Owen are self-proclaimed Wine Geek Steve Olson, a wine and spirits consultant, lecturer, advisor and educator, and Master Sommelier Doug Frost, a wine maestro, renowned author and TV personality.

Later that same day, award-winning cookbook author and Food Network chef Chef Aarón Sánchez, executive chef and co-owner of Centrico Restaurant, heads up a cooking demo (3-4:30 p.m.) with Olson and with Master Sommelier Steve Geddes, an award-winning chef and teacher, at a private home in Telluride. From 5-6:30 p.m., a 90-Minute Wine Expert demonstration featuring Master Sommelier Greg Harrington, an award-winning wine director, winemaker and television and radio personality,will take place at the Ah Haa School. Wrapping things up: a VIP Welcome Dinner at La Marmotte, an intimate night of wonderful fare and wine pairings open only to VIP-access ticketholders.

Friday kicks off with a Colorado Wine Seminar, 10-11:15 a.m., in Elks Park, featuring MS Doug Frost, at the same time a Sparkling Wine Reserve is being hosted by Master Sommelier Andrea Robinson, a James Beard Award Winner, best-selling author and TV host, heads up a Sparkling Wine event at Oak Street Plaza, where she will pair world-class bubblies with California caviar, from classic sturgeon caviar to cutting-edge bacon-infused roe with rose.

Friday lunch brings back Chef Aarón Sánchez, at Allreds, where he will be pairing perfect food, great wines and spectacular views, teaming up for Master Sommeliers Steve Olson and Keith Goldston, with special guest Ron Cooper, founder of Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal. A Cooking Demo with Sue Torres takes place from 12:30-2 p.m. at a TBA location. From 2:30-3:45 p.m., visit the Extreme Vineyards Reserve, at Oak St. Plaza, featuring Master Sommeliers Ken Fredrickson and Keith Goldston. Also from 2:30-3:45 p.m.: The Grand Tasting Trade Tasting, at The Peaks, free to members of the trade and press, with hundreds of wines, appetizers and winemakers; the Grand Tasting follows, still at The Peaks, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. More than 40 wineries and exhibitors will serve their wares on Friday afternoon in the Crystal Room and on Mt. Wilson Terrace and the outside decks. Winemakers and vineyard owners will meet-and-greet attendees; great wines will be poured; and everyone will be able to enjoy the great views from the decks.

Friday afternoon, on the patio outside the Mountain Village restaurant, La Piazza, that establishment's restaurateur Paolo Canclini teams up with Master Sommelier Bobby Stuckey and Partner Chef Lachlan Patterson, who opened the renowned Frasca Food and Wine seven years ago in Boulder, for a premier Wine Festival event, The Italian Reserve.

Saturday kicks off with a Cocktail Seminar, 10-11:15 a.m., featuring Renowned Mixologist Andy Seymour in Elks Park, and special guests.

The Frasca duo of Stuckey and Patterson return to La Piazza Saturday, this time teaming up with Italian winemaker Christian Patet for lunch. At Palmyra at the Peaks, Master Sommeliers Sue Torres, Andrea Robinson, Steve Olson and Ken Fredrickson team up with special guest Ron Cooper, founder, Del Maguey, Single Village Mezcal. A Fortified Wine Tasting and Cured Ham Carving takes place from 2:30-3:30 p.m. at Oak St. Plaza, feature MS Steve Geddes, who is also a chef and teacher. At the same time, i Elks Park, MS Keith Goldston hosts a Portuguese Wine Seminar. At 4:30 p.m., the action in Elks Park turns to a presenter Book-Signing. Wrapping up the day is the Toast of Telluride, 4:30-6:30 p.m., with participating wineries serving their wines in participating Telluride galleries.  Toast locations include Telluride Gallery of the Fine Arts, Lustre, the Schilling Gallery, Elinoff Gallery, Dolce Jewels, Between the Covers, The Wine Mine, and Telluride Bottleworks, as well as Elks Park and the Oak Street Park, at the Telluride Gondola Station.

Sunday, June 26, wraps things up with a final Brunch, 10:30-12:30 p.m., at the Peaks.
