Outlining available options, a Governor’s Energy Office representative with the Low-Income Weatherization Program community will visit the Ouray Community Center, 320 6th Ave., on Monday, Aug. 22, for a 12-1 p.m. weatherization presentation (during the senior lunch), followed by a question-and-answer session, 1-3 p.m.
For those unable to attend, or for help in applying, SMPA members can call 970/249-4774 in Montrose, Ouray, San Miguel and Hinsdale Counties.
Residents who automatically qualify for weatherization include those receiving financial assistance from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Aid to Needy and Disabled, Old Age Pension, Supplemental Security Income, and Low Income Energy Assistance Program; eligibility can also be determined by household incomes.
The weatherization process, which helps to reduce energy use, while improving comfort year-round, often includes basic energy efficiency measures such as weather-stripping and caulking exterior doors and windows. The goal is to protect homes and their interiors from the outside elements, particularly, heat, cold, precipitation, and wind.
“While SMPA may not be able to provide direct financial assistance with this program, we want to make sure our members have access to any available funds that are out there. We encourage any of our members who are eligible for the weatherization program to take advantage of it,” said SMPA General Manager, Kevin Ritter. “Any assistance a member gets will help them have a more comfortable home and more affordable energy bills.”
San Miguel Power Association, Inc. is a member-owned, locally controlled rural electric cooperative with offices in Nucla and Ridgway.
