It was about five months ago that Lauren started baking cupcakes and giving them away to friends; the cupcakes were so popular that Kerri convinced her sister they should sell them.
Before Lauren knew it, Kerri set up a Facebook page to promote their new specialty product. The orders started pouring in, and the sisters have been busy ever since.
Their mother owns Noon and Night Catering, and Lauren, also a hairdresser, is a great cook, Kerri said.
But Kerri didn’t discover her talent for making creative cupcake displays until they went into business. She’s found she can make imaginative cupcake displays to fit any theme. She even created one around a vintage Schwinn bicycle, and another from tiered tree trunks, for the Beaumont Hotel. For a baby shower, she created a cupcake display in an old bassinette.
“I didn’t know I had talent,” Kerri says. “Mom and Lauren are good cooks, and I thought, ‘What am I good at?’”
Now she knows, and no theme or idea is too challenging.
“It’s just fun,” she said. “It’s amazing what you can do, and you can turn anything into a cupcake display — any thing, any theme.”
The cupcakes themselves are works of art, Kerri said, as she described one of Lauren’s recent creations, a red wine cupcake made with chocolate, with a red wine and crème cheese icing topped with a sprig of rosemary.
“They’re awesome, and so moist,” she said.
Another specialty is the bacon cupcake, which Kerri said tastes like breakfast on a Sunday morning.
“Lauren can create a recipe to fit your theme,” she said.
Lauren says she is picky about using fresh ingredients, and all cupcakes are baked either the day before or the day of an event, and the icing only goes on just before they go out the door. Until now, all the cupcakes the two have sold have all been special orders, but just last week, the sisters started selling Dilly Dale’s Delights cupcakes at Dahlia Florals on Main Street. The cupcakes at Dahlia are larger than the catered cupcakes, but are just as yummy, Lauren said.
“We change the display at Dahlia’s every two days. One example is a chocolate-peanut-banana cupcake made with chocolate and homemade banana pudding, topped with whipped peanut butter frosting, and drizzled with chocolate,” she said. They also offer a lemon cupcake filled with raspberry jam.
“We get really creative. Some cupcakes come in a tin and are eaten with a fork, like the chocolate raspberry,” Lauren said. “We try to stay with the season, and will be making pumpkin soon.”
In addition to business being good, Kerri said one of the nice things about your own company is meeting other young entrepreneurs.
“The best part is seeing how many young people are going into business for themselves. It’s like we’re feeding off each other, and we refer business to each other,” she said. “We just did a wedding for Dahlia’s.”
Using cupcakes costs less per serving than a slice of wedding cake, Lauren said, and there are also more choices available. But they also have a specialty cake maker on call for people who want to go the traditional route.
Like a cocktail, Kerri said, cupcakes and displays can be personalized and offer a variety of flavors. She said it’s a “great compliment” when people take photos of the displays, but that’s not the best part.
“It’s the look they get on their face when they (take their) first bite,” she said.
Lauren says her recipes are secret, but Kerri chimed in, “The secret is they’re made with a lot of love.”
For a new business, the orders are pouring in, Lauren said, and she knows the results will be good.
