One of the shining moments in a Telluride local’s life, other than epic powder days and an incredible lineup at Bluegrass, is when the opportunity to purchase a home in the region becomes a reality. Fortunately, those moments happen rather frequently on account of help and support from the Telluride Association of REALTORS® (TAR) and its First Time Home Buyer’s Assistance Fund program. The program has helped make dreams come true for locals by providing financial assistance toward the purchase of a first home. As successful as the past 10 years have been, 2012 was no different as a total of $21,667 was awarded to first time homebuyers.  January through the end of the year, we presented to 15 recipients in the form of 11 grants.  Sam Burgess, our most recent award recipient states, "Without the help of the TAR grant, my dream of owning my own slice of the Telluride pie might never have been realized.  Now I truly consider myself a local!"

Since its inception in June 2002, TAR’s FTHBAF has donated upwards of $333,867 to 426 individuals in the form of 289 grants.  As applicant numbers continue steadily, TAR and the brokerage community generously and continuously give to benchmark those numbers. The money behind the FTHBAF program comes from several contributors, the largest of which are local Realtors/TAR members. Over 80 percent of our Telluride area brokers voluntarily contribute a portion of every closed transaction to the program. This translates to roughly 130 involved brokers, employed by 36 brokerage firms, who repeatedly make donations. All of the monies granted are applied toward the FTHBAF recipient’s closing costs. Even the public is inclined to give as with the Metzger family that has continually given to the fund this past five years and counting and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have such interest.  Additionally, Affiliate TAR members financially contribute to the fund. Opening financial doors and thus enabling the core of the Telluride community to call this area home for years to come solidifies and preserves the unique spirit and soul of this spectacular place. TAR recognizes, as well as identifies, with this fact and hopes the program, paired with its other local programs, will continue to flourish.  “The REALTORS actively give back to our community in many ways. Assisting first time home buyers in the purchase of their new home is, perhaps, the most rewarding thing we do” says TAR President Stewart Seeligson.  Those interested in applying for a FTHBAF grant, should contact TAR at 970/728-5172.  All applications are due to the TAR office 28 days prior to the closing date.

Congratulations to all of the TAR 2012 FTHBAF Grant Recipients: Karl Welter;  Miracle Sickels;  Sarah & Brad Zugalla;  Hallie Bevan & Mark Simpson;  Luke Holguin & Sarah Shepardson;  Kristin Millord;  Jody Lambert;  Angela Peterson;  Calob Ebright;  Sam Burgess;  and Brittanny & Brooke Harvard.
