I wanted to pass on to the town of Telluride some financial information that I received from the library. What I requested was, “How much money was spent on the library director’s travel expenses in 2010, 2011, and 2012, and how many days did she travel?”
The total for gas and lodging and such was $23,217 and the total per year increased every year. The total number of days of travel was 108 and the number of days per year increased every year. If we assume she was getting paid while traveling – which she was – then one can figure that she got paid about $43,000 while on these trips. That's a total of over $66,000 over the past three years that the public has been charged so that Barb can travel throughout Colorado, and to Oregon, California, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, and get paid while doing it.
Two questions: Why does Barb Brattin need to be away from the library so much, and why have her expenses increased over the past three years while the library budget has been decreasing?
I personally find it disgraceful that the library director is charging the public so much for traveling – while getting paid – at the same time the public is losing services. The same goes for the members of the Library Board and the Board of County Commissioners who have either approved of these expenses, or have not bothered to investigate them.
