As superintendents of the Ridgway and Ouray school districts, we are writing to encourage community members to run in the November election for a seat on our respective Board of Education. Ridgway needs four school board members and Ouray needs three school board members.
Boards of Education shape the future of education for our community’s children. They establish goals, oversee budgets, and adopt the operating policies that impact our school districts.
An effective school board member has both the desire and the time to serve. The work is rewarding, but requires a strong belief in the value of education and the willingness to join as a team member to ensure our public schools provide a quality experience for all.
Potential candidates for both districts are invited to come to a “School Board Candidates” meeting on Aug. 28, 5-8 p.m., in the Rodeo Room at the Ouray County 4-H Building. Current school board members and Randy Black, a consultant from Colorado Association of School Boards, will talk about the school board experience, the election process, and answer questions. Pizza will be served!
If you are interested in becoming a school board member, nomination petitions may be obtained at the Superintendent’s office of the desired district you are running for, beginning on Aug. 7. The petitions must be signed by at least 25 eligible voters and returned to the Superintendent’s office by 3 p.m. on Aug. 30 of the district in which you are running.
We hope that community members who are motivated to serve our students and schools will consider joining our Board of Education. More Board of Education election guidelines and information can be found online: Ridgway Schools at ridgway.k12 and and Ouray Schools at ouray.k12.co.us.
