Editor:

Sadly, another loved pet was lost to mountain lions.  This year, three pet owners lost their animals to mountain lions and as a result, four lions were ordered killed with another orphaned.  Many of us would like to know how to build an enclosure which effectively protects our goats, donkeys and other valued animals from predators. Clearly, a pen which prevents our animals from running to escape a predator but does not exclude the predator only serves as a convenient feeding enclosure for predators, especially mountain lions.  It is little wonder our animals fall prey: we pen them so they cannot escape the mountain lion!

It may be time that the Division of Wildlife offers constructive and effective advice for protecting the animals we love. Presently, the only Division response to the loss of a pet to a predator is to kill the lion at taxpayer expense then pay us the value of our animal.  We would prefer protecting our animals and leaving the lions to roam naturally.

Concerned,
