MONTROSE – The A+Y Design Gallery has expanded its gallery/gelato shop, and now offers locally roasted coffee, as well, to its visitors.

A + Y’s Adam Duncan decided a lounge area would be an enhancement to the large and welcoming space at 513 East Main St. “We want our customers to feel comfortable when they come in here,” he said. “We want them to order and then walk around or go have a seat in our new cozy seating area.” 

To that end, the master woodworker Duncan designed and crafted a coffee-table complete with a fire pit; a soft couch and urban-chic chairs completed the welcoming ambiance, for shoppers and the café crowd alike.

“We welcome people to schedule their meetings and host them out of our location around our beautiful conference table,” said Duncan. 

Along with the lattes, cappuccinos and drip coffee, A + Y now offers affogatos, a scoop of gelato sitting in a shot of espresso.

Black Canyon Jet Center Personnel Complete NATA Fire Safety Training Session 

MONTROSE – Black Canyon Jet Center personnel recently attended the National Air Transportation Association’s Line Service Supervisor Training fire safety training session in Indianapolis. Working with air transportation professionals to increase proficiency in strategic planning, supervising staff, motivating others and communicating and coaching their respective teams, this high-impact, high-energy seminar brought participants to new levels of leadership and skills. Training focused on such tarmac tasks as aircraft refueling operations, parking arriving aircraft, safely towing aircraft in and around taxing areas and hangars, perform regular quality control checks on aviation fuel, customer service functions and more.

Attendees included Manny Gomez, line service supervisor, and John Hansens, line service representative, who were re-certified as line service supervisors, participating in hands on fire safety and also to further their education. While there, they learned the latest standards and techniques in aviation to lead Black Canyon Jet Center staff in maintaining the world-class service and safety for which they are known.

“Our business can never have too much knowledge of aircraft and fire safety and customer service.  As a company, we can always improve,” said Gomez. “Attending NATA seminars gives us outside perspectives, training and fresh ideas which we can take back and use on a daily basis.”

Prior to attending the line supervisor training, Gomez and Hansens were required to complete the FAA Fire Safety Training. During the seminar, they were given hands-on safety training in the use of fire extinguishers, because “fires can be exceptionally dangerous on the aviation ramp, even deadly,” said Hansens, who prior to coming onboard at the Black Canyon Jet Center was with the Olathe Fire Department for 22 years (and fire chief for six years).”Handling aviation fuel comes with serious responsibilities,” said Hansens, and for line service representatives especially, “Proper fire safety knowledge and training is essential.” 

The National Air Transportation Association is the leading organization representing such aviation service businesses as fixed-base operators, charter providers, and aircraft-management, and flight-training and airline-service companies. Founded in 1940, NATA aggressively promotes safety and the success of aviation service businesses through its advocacy efforts with government, the media and the public, and  by providing programs and forums to further its members’ performance.

NATA provides Safety 1st training for all Black Canyon Jet Center’s employees; its goal is to train and provide the best guidance tools, training and support for members who provide ground assistance in the industry. All members of the BCJC line service staff are required to pass the Safety 1st training and be recertified each year prior to working on the ramp. Black Canyon Jet Center has been a member of NATA and upholding their standards since 2006.

Tickets on Sale for Western Colorado Hospitality Summit

MONTROSE – The Western Business Alliance and the Montrose Office of Business and Tourism team up to host the Western Colorado Hospitality Summit  Thursday, Oct. 24-Friday, Oct. 25, at the Montrose Pavilion Events Center in Montrose, Colorado.  

With seminars, interactive classes and certification courses, the summit covers a range of topics from customer service to branding to social media; participants include business owners, managers and staffers in industries such as restaurant, hotel, transportation, travel and tourism and more service industries from Colorado’s Western Slope.

“By the end of the summit, we want participants to have a greater understanding of the role they place in gaining client and customer loyalty which directly results into more business and greater longevity of their business,” said Sue Hansen co-director of WBA.  “Whether their season is summer, winter or all year long, or whether they are a front desk attendant, a server or even a hair stylist, they will come away with actionable ideas and inspirations to do their job better and grow their business.” 

Montrose OBT Director Rob Joseph is excited about the event and what it can mean for the region of southwest Colorado.  “Montrose, Colorado, was recently named an All-America City for 2013,” he said, “but we don’t want to stop there. We expect to set a baseline of expectation for customer service with this summit, [which] is expected to bring nearly 500 service professionals from around the Western Slope to Montrose,” which will, he said, benefit local restaurants, hotels and other businesses.
