BALLOT MEASURES … Seth Cagin and I don’t always agree, but I thought his recent editorial about the county’s energy sales tax exemption removal for the coming “climate crash” (as First Voices Indigenous Radio calls it), and the Town of Telluride’s sin tax on sugary sodas, were spot on … Although I wish the Town had targeted high fructose corn syrup to start with, it’s the worst … There’s never a good time to ask citizens to hand over more money in taxes for some nebulous common good. But climate crash is hardly nebulous. It’s all too real, and starting to collapse systems all too fast. Clearly, we can’t expect the federal government to lead. The two party system has become a one party tea fest intending to break the citizens’ piggybank with economic brinkmanship. Local government can lead. But only if citizens want us to … If one percent of your energy bill is too much to ask in this current capitalist bust cycle, then you might not support Ballot Issue 1-A. But, to start us on the path to thinking and acting – as First Peoples have always advised us to – for the next seven generations, the measure seems like a small but significant investment in the future … As a Green, I have to ask who wouldn’t want to support the chance of a stable, sustainable, resilient millennium to come? We as a nation are already coming late to the problem. At least this starts us acting locally while thinking globally about a changing climate … As for Telluride’s tax measure, let me punt (as a Norwoodian) – other than to say that if I lived in Telluride, I’d vote for it (although my youngest son strongly disagrees).
GET ME OUT OF JAIL … Muscular Dystrophy is a group of muscle diseases that weaken the musculoskeletal system and hamper locomotion. The Muscular Dystrophy Association has been raising funds for years to fund research, provide medical and community services, and educate health professionals and the general public … Locally, they’ve started a fundraiser that’s slated to put me behind bars at Brown Dog Pizza in Telluride on Wed., Nov. 6, at high noon – unless you can help me raise bail. A tax-deductible contribution is really what’s being asked for … Help me raise money for local and regional MD kids who attend a summer camp each year. Call me at 728-3844 or 327-4767, and let’s arrange a donation that can help me make bail (and in reality raise money for this good cause) … Did you read about MD-challenged Maickel Melamed of Caracas, Venezuela, who completed the Chicago Marathon last week, after a grueling 16 hour, 46-minute race? It’s the power of overcoming challenges, whatever they may be, that inspire us all.
DRONES … Thank you, Mahala Yousafzai, the Pakistani heroine shot in the head on her school bus by Taliban gunmen, for bravely telling Pres. Obama at a recent meeting she had in the White House that our military’s drone assassinations, which have massacred hundreds of innocent citizens (including women and children), are making terrorists of ordinary Pakistani citizens … A wonderful case of talking truth to power.
