It has been almost a year since California-based math rock super duo El Ten Eleven offered a glimpse into their latest studio efforts. Dropping the fully remixed edition of their 2012 breakout record Transitions with the help of high profile producers like Com Truise last April, Kristian Dunn and Tim Fogarty answer back this month with their post-rock, experimental 3 song project For emily EP. Although relatively brief in track listings, the 20 minute runtime managed to touch upon all of their signature sonic ingredients that keep fans interested.

"Nova Scotia" settles on a smooth guitar tone riffing over snare drum driven rhythms to open doors into ambient bass lines and thick crescendos that seem to keep pushing to the right peaks. Approaching the same thread differently, gated synthesizers dance around modulating dirty organ beats as the core structure for "Yyes!." Both tracks compliment each other in a seamless fashion, feeling more like an orchestral shift than a stop and start of a new song. That staple function of Dunn and Fogarty's has continued to aid their approach towards making two guys sound like a full band - helped by the fact that they utilize odd instruments like a double neck guitar/bass and electronic drums.

With that many moving parts in play it is amazing to map the progression of the sarcastically titled "Reprise" as all of the elements of the previous two tracks coincide for an extended build up. A psychedelic peak seems inevitable and serves as the cool down for record.

Although they have mastered the execution in a studio setting, replicating their hyper-technical compositions on stage is another animal altogether. As part of a Western sweeping tour, El Ten Eleven will stop through the Animas City Theater in Durango on Tuesday, February 18th. The sole, must see show in the Western Slope is for just about any music pundit with an appreciation for progressive instrumentation. The band will also take on Aspen's Belly Up, Breckenridge's Three20South and The Fox Theater in Boulder the same week.
