OURAYThe City of Ouray has received five letters of interest from Ouray residents who are interested in filling a pending vacancy on the Ouray Planning Commission that will be created when longtime commission chair Bud Zanett steps down in March.

The Ouray City Council will appoint a new planning commissioner to take Zanett’s place at its next regularly scheduled council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Ouray residents Brad Clark, Carl Cockle, Mike Fedel, Chris Hinkson and Adam Kunz are all vying for the position. The majority of these applicants have some level of previous experience in local government.

Cockle served five years on the Ouray County Planning Commission; recently, he has made unsuccessful bids for Ouray Mayor and Ouray City Councilor. Hinkson recently stepped down from the Ouray School Board after serving two terms. Kunz served as the Ouray Fire Chief for eight years.

Fedel has held numerous elected positions in Ouray and Ouray County; he is currently serving his first term as a Ouray County Commissioner; his seat is up for election in November. He also served two terms on the Ouray School Board, and he formerly served on the Ouray Planning Commission from 2004-2006. He also worked for six years as the City of Ouray’s Land Use Planner.

While he has not held an elected or appointed position, Clark cited his extensive experience in the construction and landscaping industries as providing him with necessary expertise in land use, planning and development.

In addition to making a new appointment to the planning commission at Tuesday’s meeting, council is also expected to re-appoint planning commission members Jeff Skoloda and Lezah Saunders whose present terms expire in March. or Tweet @iamsamwright
