As a veterinarian, I am an active participant in local policy debates surrounding animal and human health. But because my clinic serves a great diversity of people and opinions (Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, all religions and no religion) I try not to take official positions on any subject outside my field. Colorado Amendment 48 falls well within my area of knowledge and expertise.
Therefore I urge Ouray County and all Colorado voters to please vote NO on this poorly crafted and certainly harmful proposal.
This amendment, if passed, could potentially circumnavigate Roe vs. Wade in Colorado – even in the cases of rape or ectopic pregnancies (where the pregnancy implants outside the uterus and causes extreme pain, suffering and (if not terminated) can cause death to the mother).
For the last 10 years I have had the honor of working with many of the young men and women of this community and though I have no children of my own, I have a number of nieces. Ask yourself as I did – if my daughter or niece or wife or neighbor were facing certain horrible death, would I want her doctor to be forced, by law, to stand by and do nothing?
Know this. There are only a little more than 70 doctors who support Amendment 48 in the state of Colorado. On the other hand, the Colorado Medical Society, the Colorado Gynecological-Obstetrical Society, and the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians are all opposing this amendment. Together, these organizations represent about 7,000 Colorado doctors. They and I are concerned about our daughters and our nieces and our friends and our families. Please vote ‘no’ on 48.
