The Telluride AIDS Benefit is calling for local artists and designers to enter a new design contest for the 2006 benefit. The impetus behind the first TAB, started in 1994 by Kandee DeGraw and friends, was to raise funds for Telluride resident Robert Presley, who had AIDS and eventually died from complications related to the disease in August 1997. Presley, however, saw a bigger plan for the money and asked that funds raised be contributed to the Western Colorado AIDS Project and other organizations dedicated to AIDS research and patient care.
Robert was a true friend of the arts, and a talented artist himself. To honor his memory, vision and generous spirit, TAB is holding the first Robert Presley Memorial Design Contest. Artists are invited to design costumes or outfits for the contest, and have until January 20, 2006 to come up with their own theme and creation. Judging will take place soon afterward to create a locals' line. Top entries will be featured in the 2006 TAB Fashion Shows.
Ideas can include but are not limited to: Freebox items; the 2006 TAB theme, "Open your eyes, AIDS is STILL on the RISE"; Telluride's colorful history; or your own unique vision.
The Ah Haa School for the Arts is sponsoring the contest by offering studio time to artists needing space. TAB and Ah Haa will offer an information session on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Ah Haa School. Call TAB at 728-0869 or Ah Haa at 728-3886 for more information.
