Grand Opening Coincides With Open Houses and Peter Pan

OURAY – The aroma of fresh soap fills the small space of Ouray’s newest gift store, The Blue Pear, located next to the Artisan Bakery in the Wright Opera House building at 450 Main St. in Ouray. A grand opening will take place Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The boutique store carries distinctive products for the home, body and imagination, such as little porcelain tooth-fairy boxes and colorful vintage aprons. It also offers a variety of unique cards and rubber stamps as well as candles.

Owner Michelle Poirier and her husband Bill Miles hope to kick off the tourist season and introduce themselves and their store to the community this weekend. Poirier is from Colorado but has been living on the Outer Banks of North Carolina for several years. She visited Ouray as a child and remembers descending into town from Red Mountain Pass and being struck with the beauty and charm of the place.

Missing the mountains, Poirier and her husband bought a house in Ouray three years ago and rented it out. They officially relocated to Ouray a few months ago, and Poirier said she is ready to put roots down in the community. She hopes her store will bring something a bit “out-of-the-box,” so to speak, to the town she finds so charming.

Poirier is constantly in search of unique items for the shop. For instance, she loved a piece of art created by Michigan-based artist Amy Callaghan so much that she commissioned her to create The Blue Pear’s logo, a blue-eyed girl in pigtails cradling a blue pear in her arms.

The store’s grand opening will coincide with open houses at the Artisan Bakery and San Juan Mountain Guides, established businesses located in the same building. There will also be a silent auction over the weekend to benefit the Friends of the Wright Opera House, a nonprofit organization aiming to purchase the Wright to preserve it as a venue for performance and visual art. The Friends of the Wright also supports and promotes music, theater and educational organizations and activities that build community.

The silent auction will include a gift package titled “A Day In Ouray.” The package will include a room at the Box Canyon Lodge, food from the Artisan Bakery and an adventure trip from San Juan Mountain Guides, as well as gifts from the Blue Pear. The shop will also be having smaller gift giveaways throughout the weekend.

Also this weekend, in the Wright Opera House itself, Ouray County Dance students from 3 years old and up will perform a dance production of Peter Pan. The performances are Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Ouray County Dance is part of Weehawken Creative Arts and is led by artistic director Natasha Pyeatte. The performance is a culmination of six weeks of dance classes for children and adults in forms ranging from hip-hop and jazz dance to tap and ballet.
