Upon entering the country club elegant dining room at Remington’s, which looks out over manicured greens and a purple Sneffels Range skyline, I immediately wondered if, perhaps, jeans were a bad idea.

But after nestling into a cool glass of chardonnay, Food and Beverage Manager James Cronin quickly put me at ease.

“We want the atmosphere to be reflective of the San Juans,” he said, meaning, in so many words that, yes, jeans are welcome.

Ever since The Bridges Golf and Country Club and its restaurant, Remington’s, went under new ownership in April 2011, Cronin and his staff have worked hard to move from a perceived feeling of stuffiness to a fun and relaxed atmosphere that continues to offer an up-scale dining experience. It’s simply a better fit for Montrose.

You can easily dive into the relaxed spirit of things with one of bartender Bobby Walker’s drinks of the week. On this particular evening he was shaking up a “Peach on the Beach.”

Why wouldn’t you, even if the closest beach is a thousand miles away?  No doubt the peach is local!

From the kitchen, Executive Chef Roberta Masden is doing her part by creating dishes that are reflective of the San Juans as well. The stuffed chicken breast with artisan goat cheese and a fire-roasted green chili ($18) did just that. It’s finished with a black bean salsa, lime crème and red pepper coulis. Yes, we are in southwest Colorado. The spicy chicken dish is an example of what Masden strives for in her creations: Bright flavors and bright colors spotlighting local ingredients.

A cedar plank salmon ($22), cooked medium, is an easy go-to for fish lovers. It’s served with a potlatch honey glaze. For more tang, give the bacon wrapped scallops a go ($26). It’s served with a fresh pineapple and mango barbecue sauce.

Of course, if a restaurant is going to reflect the flavors of western Colorado, what would it be without a great steak? At Remington’s, they don’t leave that to question. There’s a petite sirloin ($21), a grilled New York Strip ($24) and a pan-seared rib-eye ($26). Don’t leave out the flame broiled filet mignon medallions ($26) or the grilled lamb loin chops ($24), which are served with cherry and mint sauce. Remington’s bar menu carries Colorado-raised handcrafted burgers ($8.95), cooked to preference as well.

There are other flavors on the menu that offer surprises. The traditional Greek gyro ($9.95) made with lamb and beef and served with tzatziki sauce is just that. A welcome surprise.

And as one Remington’s regular was eager to point out, “this place has the second-best fish and chips ($11.95) I’ve ever had, and I am from Boston,” he said. “Don’t quote me by name but the crab cakes ($11.95) here are better than my mom’s.”

For anyone looking for a lighter meal, there’s a range of salads regularly on the menu including a black and blue salad ($12.95) that’s made of fresh greens, tomatoes, mushrooms, bleu cheese crumbles, dried cranberries and candied walnuts. Soups are made daily and don’t be afraid to give them a try. The sight and smell of Masden’s vegetable soup gave me pause before choosing a dinner salad.

Cronin, Masden and the rest of The Bridges staff, including its new owner, have charted a course in the right direction. With friendly staff, bright and flavorful food, and a relaxed, fun atmosphere, Remington’s is a place to celebrate an anniversary, dine out on a first date or just enjoy a round of beers after 18 holes.

Go ahead, wear your jeans.

BAR FOOD: Remington’s offers a bar menu where you’ll find nothing over $12.95. Items include fresh fish or shrimp tacos ($9.95), a prime rib sandwich ($10.95), the Club sandwich ($9.25) and more. Served from 2-7 p.m., seven days a week.

THE VIEW: There aren’t many places in Montrose where you’ll get the kind of San Juan Mountain views than at Remington’s. The serenity on a calm, cool evening will have you thinking you are way off the beaten path in Montrose but really you’re just a few blocks east of Townsend Avenue.

Lunch is served Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Dinner served Tuesday-Saturday from 4-9 p.m. and breakfast items along with the bar menu is served on Sunday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
