The latest film by David Mackenzie (Young Adam, TFF 2003) comes from a screenplay by Jonathan Asser, who served as a therapist in one of the U.K.’s toughest prisons. Starred Up follows an ultra-violent teenager (Jack O’Connell, Skins) who, after being transferred to an adult prison, is put under the watchful eye of an older convict…his father Nev (Ben Mendelsohn). A wary process of reconciliation begins but is complicated by Eric’s growing connection with the prison’s psychologist Oliver (Rupert Friend). Can a boy wired for brutality ever be transformed?
