Eldon Ray Hurst, 58, of Telluride, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, in Colorado Springs. He was born on Nov. 26, 1954, to Joseph and Sylvia (Biggs) Hurst in Goodland, Colo.

Hurst graduated from Goodland High School in 1972, and from Northwest Kansas Technical College in 1974 I drafting. He moved to Denver, and worked as a draftsman in Denver and Colorado Springs, continuing his education as an engineer-in-training and in Feb., 1994, as a professional engineer. In Jan. 1998, he started Hurst Engineering Inc., in Telluride.

He was active in the Elks in Telluride and Montrose, running the Telluride Golf Tournament for many years, helping with Huck Finn Days, Turkey Bingo, Veterans Day, the Bike Raffle, the Pancake Breakfast, and more. He especially enjoyed working in the kitchen, and staying out of the spotlight. 

Hurst enjoyed a variety of outdoor sports, including hiking, climbing, rafting, skiing and scuba diving. Preceding him in death were his father; his sister, Loretta Pearce; his nephew, Espiririon Aguilar; and his grandparents, Joseph C. Hurst. Sr., Coral L. Hurst, William Milton Biggs and Eva May Biggs.

Survivors include his mother, of Goodland; five sisters, Betty (John Gallen) Smith of Waukomis, Okla., Marie Hurst of Goodland, Bertha (Louis) Aguilar of Goodland, Ruth (Abel) Ontiveroz of Goodland, and Mary Ann (James) Bess of Aurora; four brothers, Tom (Kim) Hurst of Broomfield, Neal (Phyllis) Hurst of Thornto, Harry Hurst of Goodland and Arthur (Cindy) Hurst of Colorado Springs.

He will be sorely missed; a better man would be hard to find. A memorial service will be held in January at the Telluride Elks.
